Know your number. Research the market rate for your role, experience level, and location using Jobnique's salary checker, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn Salary. Walk in knowing three numbers: your ideal salary, your target salary, and your minimum acceptable salary.
Wait for the offer. Never reveal your salary expectations first if you can avoid it. The first person to name a number is often at a disadvantage.
When asked about salary expectations:
"I'm flexible and more focused on finding the right fit. Could you share the budget for this role?"
When you receive an offer:
"Thank you — I'm genuinely excited about this opportunity. Based on my research and experience, I was expecting something closer to $[X]. Is there any flexibility?"
When they say the offer is fixed:
"I understand. Could we look at other aspects of the package — perhaps an earlier performance review, additional vacation days, or a signing bonus?"
When they come back with a revised offer:
"That's much more aligned with my expectations. I'd be happy to accept."
