The definitive guide to the questions every interviewer asks, with sample answers you can adapt to your own experience.
The best interview preparation combines knowing what questions to expect with having a clear framework for answering them. Here's the definitive guide.
For most behavioural questions, use the STAR framework:
"Tell me about yourself."
Use the Present–Past–Future framework. Keep it to 90 seconds. End with why you're here.
"Why do you want this role?"
Combine what excites you about the role (specific, researched) with how it fits your career direction.
"Why do you want to work for us?"
Reference specific things about the company: their product, culture, mission, recent news. Never say "for the money."
"What are your greatest strengths?"
Pick 2–3 directly relevant to the job. Give evidence for each.
"I'm particularly strong at stakeholder management. In my last role, I was responsible for aligning three different departments on a major product launch — which involved weekly syncs, clear communication, and managing conflicting priorities."
"What is your greatest weakness?"
Choose something real but not disqualifying. Show self-awareness and what you're doing about it.
"I used to struggle with delegating — I wanted to keep too much control. I've worked on this deliberately over the past year by building a structured handover process and trusting my team more, and it's made me a significantly better manager."
"Tell me about a time you worked under pressure."
Choose a real example. Use STAR. End with the positive result.
"Describe a time you had a conflict with a colleague."
Focus on the resolution. Show you can navigate disagreement professionally and maintain relationships.
"Tell me about a time you failed."
Own it. Explain what you learned and what you changed as a result. This is actually one of the best questions to show emotional maturity.
"Give me an example of when you showed initiative."
Choose something where you identified a problem or opportunity others missed and took action.
"Do you have any questions for us?"
Always say yes. Ask about: the role's challenges, what success looks like, the team, career development, and next steps.
