How to answer 'Tell me about yourself'

A simple framework for delivering a confident, compelling answer to the most common interview opener.

4 min read📂 Interviews

"Tell me about yourself" is almost always the first question in an interview — and yet most candidates are caught off guard by it. The good news: it's completely predictable, so you can prepare a polished answer in advance.

The Present–Past–Future framework

The simplest and most effective structure for this question is:

Present: Start with your current role and what you do day-to-day.

"I'm currently a marketing manager at a mid-sized SaaS company, where I lead a team of four and oversee all digital acquisition channels."

Past: Briefly mention relevant experience that got you here.

"Before that I spent three years in content marketing at an agency, working with B2B tech clients."

Future: Explain why you're here and what you're looking for.

"I'm now looking to move into a more strategic role at a scaling company, which is what drew me to this opportunity."

Keep it to 90 seconds

Aim for 90 seconds to 2 minutes. Longer than that and you'll lose the interviewer's attention. Practice out loud until it feels natural — not memorised, but fluent.
