How to handle a panel interview

Practical tips for staying calm and confident when facing multiple interviewers at once.

A panel interview — where you're interviewed by two or more people simultaneously — can feel intimidating. But with the right approach, it's actually an opportunity to impress multiple decision-makers in a single meeting.

Before the interview

Find out in advance who will be on the panel. Ask HR or your recruiter for names and job titles. Research each person on LinkedIn so you can tailor your answers to their perspective (HR cares about culture fit, the hiring manager cares about skills, a peer cares about working style).

During the interview

Address your answer to the person who asked the question, then scan the room. Begin your response looking at the questioner, then naturally make eye contact with the others as you speak. This keeps everyone engaged.

Direct your closing to the hiring manager. When summarising why you're the right person, make eye contact with the key decision-maker.

Keep track of who's who. Use their names naturally in your answers — it makes the conversation feel more personal.

Don't ignore quieter panel members. Sometimes a quiet panellist has significant influence. Engage them with eye contact even when they haven't asked a question.

After the interview

Send a follow-up thank-you email to each panellist individually, referencing something specific from the conversation with each person. This level of personalisation is rare and makes a strong impression.
